Selling your home can be an overwhelming experience. Trust us, we know. And over the years, we’ve worked with a lot of homeowners who don’t have time to waste once their house is on the market. They need to sell their house, and they need to sell it now.
Sound familiar?
When we work with clients we always advise that they follow these four simple steps to get immediate results in their home-selling process.
We’ve talked a little bit about de-personalizing your house in the past. But we can’t stress this point enough. When someone comes to look at your home, they want to imagine themselves living there. And it’s hard for people to imagine themselves in someone else’s home.
Go through your house and take down all of your family pictures, both on the wall and on display. It also helps to remove any name placards and monogrammed accessories throughout the house. It might be hard to take these things down, but don’t worry, once you sell your house, you can hang them again in your new home.
Clutter is perhaps the biggest turn-off for most prospective buyers. Clutter and disorganization tend to stress people out and make them want to run away. This isn’t exactly the reaction you want to evoke in buyers… is it?
Take an afternoon to go through your house. Organize your cupboards, shelves and mantles. The cleaner and more organized they look, the longer people will want to stay in your home.
When you live in a house, it become natural to gather a lot of things. But, like we’ve been saying, people don’t want to look at all of your things. So, after you organize and declutter be sure to pack these extras away.
But, don’t just shove them in a closet or under a bed. Do yourself a favor and get them ready to move out. Go to the store and get large totes, then label them according to the extra contents you’ve found in your house and store them nicely in your basement.
Once you’ve done all of the surface level preparations, you can then begin to fix any larger issues in your home. We always recommend that people go room by room with their repairs. Start with the first room that potential buyers will be entering, then continue repairing with the natural flow of the house. If you need help deciding what types of repairs and what types aren’t, be sure to check out this blog post.
