Moving into a new home can be exciting! But it’s so difficult to know exactly what and WHEN you are supposed to do everything to prepare your new home. Today, we put together this timeline of all the little things you should do before moving into your new home. We hope it helps you get organized and have a clean transition in your new home.
30 to 60 days before your move in date: Schedule a moving company for your big move!
30 to 60 days before your move in date (or as specified in your rental agreement): Submit a formal letter of intention to move out of your rental to your landlord.
30 to 60 days before your move in date: Contact your children’s new and old school and have their records transferred.
15 to 30 days before your move in date: Schedule carpet cleaner to clean your new home’s carpets before your arrival.
15 days before your move in date: Contact a locksmith and schedule a time to have your locks changed in your new home.
10 to 15 days before your move in date:Call your utility service providers— schedule a shut-off date with your old home and a turn on date with your new home.
7 to 10 days before your move in date: Submit a change of address request with all of your financial institutions and online bill pay services.
7 to 10 days before your move in date: Go to your local post office and fill out a “change of address” form
7 to 10 days before your move: Properly get rid of flammable ietms that you are not taking to your new home, like old paint cans. (You might want to try selling these on Craigslist or Facebook garage sale websites)
2 days before your move in date: Get cash for the extra (unexpected) expenses on move in day.
1 to 2 days before your move: If you are taking your refrigerator, be sure to empty, unplug it and properly defrost it before your move.
1 to 2 days before your move:Remove extra gas from snow blowers and lawn mowers before your move.
