Remodel Tip #1

Time to start paintingRemodeling or home improvement projects can be exciting yet overwhelming opportunities. I am coming off of two major remodel projects in my home. Perhaps some of my lessons (which were learned the hard way) can help you as you proceed with your next item on the ‘to do’ list. Here are a few tips from someone who has been there, done that.

Remodel Tip #1:  Bite off Only What You Can Chew

One of the first things I learned is that projects will take longer and will cost more than you think they will, especially if you do it yourself. Unexpected set backs from products being back ordered to behind the wall issues that could not have been predicted can quickly set a project off course. Even well intentioned Saturdays set apart for painting a room get behind after long lines at the home improvement store or rollers that get too goopy.

Leave yourself plenty of margin to get a project done so the project you bite off isn’t too big to chew. Know it will take you longer than you intend and it will have hidden costs you didn’t account for. From needing an extra box of flooring to hardware to new decorative pillows, expenses will surprise you. Building in a 10-20{16e476496f5f3a73cb19f20a476d08f8bca71b0bf9338242f1d2bf6ed337f382} cushion on the budget will help absorb those expensive bites.

A home improvement or remodel project can drastically affect the daily life of a family. It is not in your best interest to undertake major construction in multiple areas of the house to the point that the home can no longer function. Be prepared to take smaller steps or proactive steps to leave the home. You and your family cannot chew months of major disruption without planning and preparation.
