Remodel Tip #2

458148963_c761780506As I think about how thankful I am to be finished with our recent home remodel projects, I thought I’d share a few tips so that the learning curve of others may be shorter. Perhaps our mistakes will become your successes.

Remodel Tip #1  Don’t Bite Off More Than You Can Chew (https://spicarealestate.com/remodel-tip-1/)

Remodel Tip #2:  Use Your Experiences to Your Advantage

One of the quickest ways to make a remodel last longer than planned and cost more than budgeted is to not use your experiences to your advantage. Many mistakes in home remodels can be traced back to homeowners attempting projects they have no qualifications or experience in.

Utilize the skills or experiences you do have. If you know how to paint – great! However, if you don’t know the first thing about electrician work, it is probably not wise to begin your learning curve with a whole house rewire. Be willing to know how it took time and talent to learn one trade and not expect for those same skills to transfer to a completely different trade. Use your experiences as an advantage in your home improvement project and don’t let your inexperience lead to a backfire of epic proportions.

I have shown many homes in my years of real estate that have had areas of homeowners learning new skills in a major project. This can backfire more than you think – often leading towards major repairs or rework after inspections in a home selling situation.

Take advantage of the small projects to learn new skills and trades from qualified workers. This will build your experience and confidence in future projects.
