5 Things to Do BEFORE You Start House Hunting

House hunting… it’s fun, exciting and stressful all at the same time. As you make your way through the home buying process, we can guarantee that you will experience a ton of varying emotions. But at Spica Real Estate, it’s our goal to make sure that all of these emotions do not tarnish your experience. Our top priority is to help you find and move into your new home with as little stress as possible.

So, you’re thinking about beginning the home buying process. NOW WHAT? What should you do before you even start looking at homes?

Below we have provided a list of 5 easy things you can do BEFORE you start house hunting in order to give yourself a jump start in the process.

5 Things to Do BEFORE You Start House Hunting

Have a Meeting with Your Spouse

Before you start the house hunting, we always recommend that you sit down and have an honest conversation with your spouse. As a couple, decide what you are hoping to accomplish during the house hunting phase. You can use this list of questions to help guide your conversation. In our experience, couples who have the same end goals in mind and a clear vision for the experience, have a better overall house hunting experience. So, sit down with your husband or wife and get real with one another. Then, contact your realtor.

Watch Our Home Buyers Video Series

Did you know that we have created an entire video series about the home buying process? In the video series we answer tons of questions you might have about the home buying process. From credit approvals to the day you sign your new home loan, we talk about it all. Haven’t seen the video series yet? Start HERE!

Research the School Districts

Before you start looking for homes, think about the school district that you are interested in. You might even want to schedule a meeting with the school of your choice to do a quick tour and hear about their progras. Knowing the schools that you are interested in will help your realtor find potential homes that meet your children’s needs.

Create a Wishlist

Make an ultimate wish list of things you are looking for in your new home. Think about what size home you want, what neighborhood you want to live in, how much yard space you want, how far your home should be from your work, etc. Whatever is it is that you want in your home, write it down. Then prioritize your wish list.

Prioritizing your wish list is important because as you shop for your home, you may not be able to meet all of the demands of your list. But, knowing the value of each wish will help you better recognize what you can and cannot live without in your new home.

Enter in to a Season of Reflection

It’s important that you really reflect on “why” you want to buy your home and “why” you want to buy it now. Get honest with yourself and your family and determine your motivating factors. For people of faith, this might mean entering into a season of prayer. Taking the time to be quiet with your thoughts and mindful of your next step will help keep you focused and on track during the home hunting process.
